| WHAT'S A JACK & JILL COMPETITION? (See below for a full explanation on the 2 Jack & Jills we will be running!) |
Jack and Jill (J&J) or Dance with a Stranger (DWAS) is a format of competition in partner dancing, where the competing couples are the result of random matching of leaders (males) & followers (females). Jack & Jill competitions are intended to test social dance skills, whereas fixed partner competitions test performance dance skills. In the U.S., Jack & Jill contests are extremely popular in the national West Coast Swing community. Rules vary in events across the country but three rules seem to be standard in most Jack & Jill contests: 1) no choreography is allowed, 2) no costumes are allowed, and 3) no lifts and drops are allowed. However, at the Champion or Invitational level, event organizers will occasionally opt for an "anything goes" Jack & Jill in which no rules apply.
Our (Nuroc Dance Company) West Coast Swing Jack & Jill competition will have the following rules applied:
1. No choreography is allowed.
2. No costumes are allowed.
3. No lifts are allowed (lifts will be determined as the followers feet leaving the ground) however drops & dips will be permitted.
Dancers will be judged individually in the heats, then dancers who make the final will redraw for new partners. Dancers will then judged as a couple in the final for the Nuroc Dance Company West Coast Swing Jack & Jill Competition. It is proposed that Heats, Semi Finals and Finals will be held as we progress through the competition! Social dancing will be held between each heat! One of the key elements of a Jack & Jill contest in the U.S. West Coast Swing community is the element of improvisation, which is why choreography is not allowed. This improv-based feature can prove to be extremely entertaining. Two levels will be available - 'West Coast Swing 101' and 'Intermediate/Advanced Open Level'. Please indicate on the Booking Form which category you wish to compete in.
| What's a Jack & Jill 'West Coast Swing 101 Competition': |
In an effort to preserve the fundamentals and characteristics of West Coast Swing, the World Swing Dance Council delved back into formal Pattern Names & Lists, starting in 1950 - and followed the development & evolution up through 2009, in order to sanction 14 BASIC PATTERNS in West Coast Swing. This was necessary in order to present 14 Patterns that could authentically represent the essence of West Coast Swing. We have had numerous requests over the past 18 years to clarify these basics. This is actually timely because of growing requests, not just across our nation, but world-wide, to provide a BASIC LIST that would serve as the 14 required, compulsory, patterns for a Basic Fundamental Competition.
Here is the current proposed list for West Coast Swing 101:
STEP PATTERN Beats of Music
1. Triple Rhythm Break & Anchor 8
2. Left Side Pass (from Front to Back, Man’s Left side) 6
3. Underarm Turn 6
4. Underarm with Hand Change 6
5. Right Side Pass (from Back to Front, Man’s R. side) 6
6. Right Torque Turn 6
7. Turning Basic 6
8. Throw-Out (from closed “Slingshot” position) 6
9. 4-Beat Starter Step 4
10. Basic Tuck (from closed position) 6
11. Push Break (Sugar Push) 6
12. Two Hand Tuck (Contra-Body) 6
13. Release Whip (Selected form of Basic Whip) 8
14. Walking Whip (Selected form of Closed Whip) 8
For "West Coast 101" Competitions, dancers should be able to dance at least 2/3rds of the 14 Basic Patterns. PLUS a Triple Rhythm Break that can serve as a "Thinking Step" for a Leader, or to complete a phrase, or mark time in place for either partner.
West Coast 101 competitions are currently “Jack and Jills”
To be eligible to compete in West Coast 101, you MAY be a Beginner. You MAY be a Newcomer. You may already be a Novice dancer. However, you are NOT eligible for West Coast 101 - if you have ever PLACED in the TOP 5 in a World Swing Dance Council recognized Competition.
| What's an Jack & Jill 'West Coast Swing Intermediate/Advanced Level Competition': |
The Intermediate/Advanced Open Level Jack & Jill Competition is open to any West Coast Swing Dancer of any level from any country or state! We would recommend that you are of at least an intermediate level to compete in this Intermediate/Advanced Open competition.
Competitors may enter both Jack & Jill Competitions! |
