> WHAT'S MODERN JIVE
> NUROC MODERN JIVE

"Modern Jive" is a partner dance described as a smooth & sexy blend of Dirty Dancing, Rock 'n' Roll, Salsa & Latin American, danced to all styles of dance music, including the current top 40 Chart Hits. It's very easy to learn due to the footwork being similar to a walking step! We say "if you can walk you can Modern Jive".

> Other Names that "Modern Jive" is known as:
Some other names you may hear Modern Jive described as are as follows: Ceroc, C-Roc, Sir-Rock, Le-Step, Dirty Latin Jive, French Latin, Le Roc, Le Groove, Latino Rock, Jive Works, Le Jive, Le Bop, Dance Roc, Mambo Rock and Modern Rock. These names are normally the company names of various dance studios in Australia who are teaching the form of dance which is "Modern Jive".

> A bit of history about "Modern Jive":
The style of dance "Modern Jive" has been in Australia since 1991, originally brought to Australia (Brisbane - Qld) by David Gotley who taught the 1st official Modern Jive Class on the 19th February 1991 in Brisbane Queensland for Le Roc Dance Society.

Nuroc Dance Company has been teaching Modern Jive since January 2001.

Nuroc Dance Company led the way in introducing step footwork (formerly only done in Intermediate classes) into regular Beginner Classes in 2005.

In February 2008, Nuroc Dance Company introduced a new starting footwork to have the Leaders (men) start on their left foot and the Followers (ladies) start on their right foot! (Modern Jive is generally taught with the men starting on their right foot and ladies starting on their left foot). Introducing this new starting footwork makes it so much easier for existing dancers to learn Modern Jive and makes the dance feel and look a lot smoother! Musicality is a huge part of Nuroc's classes with dancers being taught, in regular classes:

* How to listen to the music

* Hear the breaks and accentuate the accents in the music

* How to start on the '1' in the music!

Instructional Dancing DVD's are also available to help you by being able to take the routines into your home for valuable revision of the moves you will learn in classes - see http://www.nuroc.com.au/dvd.htm for details of all Instructional Dance DVD's available.

> WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NUROC MODERN JIVE DANCE CLASS NIGHT

The night starts at 7.15pm with registration. At 7.30pm, we start a Beginners class. This class is where you will learn a routine of fun and easy beginner moves. This class normally goes for 1 hour.

The beginner class is then followed by 30 minutes of "freestyle" social dancing where you can get up and practice what you've learnt.

At 9pm, students who are ready for a challenge, and who have mastered their basic footwork and basic moves, are welcomed to join in the Intermediate class. This is followed by more "freestyle" social dancing where again you can practice your dance moves!

In total a Nuroc Dance night lasts for over 3 hours. (7.15pm until 10.30pm)

There are 14 beginner routines in total so you will come back around to the routine you started on once you have completed 14 weeks of beginner classes. At this time you are welcome to revise the beginner classes plus do the intermediate class.

On your first night of classes you will be given a "Beginner Card". Each week when you come to classes we ask that you present this card for a stamp to be placed on it. This card will entitle you to your 4th and 8th lesson for FREE!

Remember you don't need a partner as you can rotate around with other students who don't have a partner. If you do have a partner and wish to stay dancing with that partner throughout the class you are more than welcome too!

A Nuroc class is fun so smile and don't worry if you can't do the moves straight away - it will happen in time. ROME WASN'T BUILT IN ONE DAY AND A GREAT DANCER DOESN'T LEARN OVERNIGHT HOW TO DANCE! Remember it's easier to dance if you relax, have fun and laugh when you make a mistake.

All that's left to do now is turn up at 7.15pm at any one of our venues and be prepared to learn a very easy style of dance and have lots of fun meeting new friends!

> WHAT TO WEAR AT A NUROC CLASS

> On your feet:
Try to wear shoes that will slide on the dance floor - ladies Court shoes are OK. You don't have to buy expensive dance shoes when you first start learning. Just make sure you don't wear joggers as joggers tend to stick to the dance floor every time you go to spin! Guys your standard type of black/brown shoes you would wear to the office or a wedding/party are fine - smooth soles are the best - remember no joggers if possible. Ideally leather sole shoes are the best!

Dance Shoes are sold at classes so look out at the front desk at classes!

> Clothing:
Keep it casual! A pair of jeans, or dress pants are best for the guys and a skirt, jeans or pants are fine for the girls. Just make sure you are comfortable!

Deodorant is a must! Remember no ones likes dancing with someone who smells - unless they smell nice of course! If you are prone to sweating/perspiring a lot then please bring a hand towel to use during the class.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHARLES & MICHELLE GIL
OF NUROC DANCE COMPANY & C & M'S DANCE STUDIO
'HAND PICKED' TO TEACH AT Sydney's Annual Salsa Congress

2007, 2008 & 2009

A huge honour, we are part of the elite few to be hand picked to teach at the Sydney Salsa Congress!  Double the amount of teachers applied to teach at the Congress than what workshops would be available, so we were very honoured and excited to be chosen to teach at the Congress!  This is not an opportunity that comes easily! This is a nationally and internationally recognised Salsa Event which brings about 4,000 dancers together for a weekend of learning different dance styles.   It is the biggest dance event held in Australia bringing many overseas's teachers to Australia to teach and perform!  We will be at the Sydney Salsa Congress to teach a West Coast Swing workshop!

See: http://www.sydneysalsacongress.com.au for full details on the workshops held!
